Hi
I am upgrading Service Desk 6.0 to R 11.2.
The exact scnerio is like this---
1)Both Servers are different
2)6.0 is using SQL 2000 which is live and I want to use SQL 2005 in 11.2.

The problem I am facing while importing the data from previous server.
I am Unable to Import the Data.
Please help me out.

Nikhil

pm me......

the migration can handle this
you can point at the old AHD database
and point the target to the R11.2 database
and the migration will take care of it for you.......

Are you trying to load the data yourself?

Anyway, I agree with Danegrey. The migration utility should be able to handle this for you with no issues...

actually the data stored in r11.2 is in binary format.

Previously it was not Binary.

The Old server of 6.0 is live.

I don't understand what the format of the data has to do with the migration, unless you are trying to load the data of the r6.0 installation directly onto the r11.2 installation.

The only difference between r6.0 data and r11.2 data is that some tables have been split and the unique identifier for most tables is now a uuid and not id as was the case with r6.0.

The migration tool already knows how to convert the id's of r6.0 data and generate the necessary uuid's for the individual records in the respective tables of the r11.2 MDB.

My question again...
Are you trying to load the r6.0 data manualy to the r11.2 MDB?

Yes you can, but is it highly not recommended!!!. You might want to first do this on a test or staging server so you can see what problems you come across in preparation for the actual upgrade on the production\live server.

can you please explain to me what the environment is and what you are trying to accomplish....

as N@irb has mentioned it is not adviseable to do a inplace upgrade, but it can be done.

I have just finished up one, and did not have any problems. The main problem with a in-place upgrade is that there is no fail back, execept to re-install R6.

Mine went fine, a couple errors that were not caught in testing, It was also a small shop with no database modifications and 3 web-forms, very simple.

so if you can tell us more about what you are facing we can better help you .

even doing upgrade to remote machine it is supposed to be r6 and then inplace upgrade that has a source of r6, or at least that is what the documents say.

true, but there are ways around it....

if working with secondary servers, it is not necessary to upgrade, but you can work with a clean install of r11.2

I have setup test servers, that the production server was upgrade from r6 to r11 but the test server was r11

there are ways, and it works nicely.....

But always remember, that to get r6 data to r11, the data has to be migrated and it is best to start with r6 and upgrade to r11

I pdm_extract and move to new machine and then do in place upgrade, it is super easy that way.

devluge,

Would you please elaborate a little about the PDM_extract. I have SD 6 on a 2003 Server with SQL 2000. We created a new VM server with 2003 and SQL 2005. I installed R11.2 on the new box and created the default datbase. Is it possible to migrate SD 6 data to the new server with the pdm_extract? Or is there a better way?

Thanks in advance,
Jaime

you cannot extract data from r6 and load it into r11.2
you have to do the migration, because of database changes that were made.

Thanks for the update, is there any easier way of migrating without having to install r6 on the new server and then r11.2 on top of that?

no, that is the safest way of going about and doing it.
because the migration migrates everything over, database changes in R6.

If you had no database mods at all, you might be able to install a fresh r11.2 and then see if you could run the migration process.

but I have never tried it, so not sure if would/would not work
